Description

Listowel Florist has a huge variety of flowers. The Listowel Florist is not just a floral store, we also have a gift store. The store carries a bunch of antique items. We also have great Christmas, birthday, and many more gifts. Come down and take a peek.

Listowel Florist Gift and Antiques has been in business for 65+ years of which Ray and Brenda Heeres have owned / operated it for 29 years. When we purchased the business in 1985 it was primarily a full service florist offering fresh cut flowers and plants  for all occasions. At this time the florist was the only business that sold flowers and plants. There was a very limited amount of giftware, mostly related to 'occasion giftware" meaning gifts for anniverarys and birthdays etc.

Over the next several years/decades flowers and plants became readily available at many locations and today are available at almost every convenience store, grocery or pharmacy, department or box store, greenhouse or roadside stand. These businesses offer economical and convenient quick pick up bouquets. So we have adapted to that and we specialize in customized wedding/sympathy designs. Our team of 4 designers have combined 100+years of expertise.

Our giftware lines have also evolved over the years, every 3 - 4 years the face of giftgiving changes completely as color schemes/ styles change dramatically.   We have to continually be on the forefront of upcoming trends in these areas. Today, mainly because of the internet,  people are more smart about their purchases. Social media like "Pinterest" allows consumers to be more involved in their own decorating whether for their homes or for weddings/special events.  When customers come in we help them visualize how to pull their designs spaces together or how to plan their weddings. So today we have much more "home decor" in addition to our regular "occasion gifts"

Also 6 or 7 years ago we recognized that our customers were asking to purchase our “props” (items that we used for displays but were not for sale). As we started to sell these items we realized that there was a market for vintage, used and antique furniture which lead us to start going to auctions/flea markets to find unusual and unique items to re-sell. These upcycled and repurposed items are now a large part of our inventory. Several trips have been made to purchase things from the US and overseas, particularly France.

This aspect of the business  complimented the fact that for the last 20 years Ray has also been creating birdhouses out of reclaimed barnboard. Presently he ships these all over Canada /US and some overseas. After crafting more than 25,000 birdhouses he started making custom furniture out of barnboard and reclaimed architecture and that’s primarily what he keeps busy with now. Recently we have also started upcycling , which is painting or repurposing items, to keep them out of the landfill.

Although our design team remains at 4, we have had several co-op students from LDSS join us as well as community living co-op placements over the years.

Because we are a small ‘family business’ much of our volunteering has happened at our local church and local Christian elementary/secondary school in which Ray has been extremely involved in for the last 30 years in all aspects of both of these institutions.

Early on ( 1980’s and 90’s) Ray was on the BIA. Chamber of Commerce, Planning Advisory committee.

Recently Ray has travelled several times to Nicaragua leading youth on a missions trip.

As a business we value knowing our customers for who they are not just for what they purchase. We realize that they can shop at a variety of locations/businesses and that if we want them to be a lifelong customer we have to treat them with honesty and integrity, fair prices and excellent selection,  so they will be loyal to us.

Congratulations to Listowel Florist for being nominated in the 2013, 2014 and 2015
