Started in 1856Working under the motto of ‘Where Town & country meet, the Listowel Agricultural Society strives to educate both rural and urban residents about agriculture and community traditions through livestock, homecraft and children’s events as well as bring new and exciting events and activities to the residents of North Perth and beyond.

Congratulations to The Listowel Agricultural Society on their nomination into the 2013 Business Excellence Awards - Community Service Orginizations. The Chamber is pleased to share their profile.

Founded in 1856, the Listowel Agricultural Society formed as a result of the amalgamation of the Elma Township and Wallace Township Agricultural Societies.  For 157 years the Listowel Agricultural Society has prided itself on being the place ‘Where the Town & Country Meet!’ through it’s annual Agricultural Fair, now held on the 3rd weekend of July each year.  Today’s fairs look somewhat different than in the beginning days of the Listowel Fair but the main focus still remains the same – to educate both rural and urban dwellers about agriculture and it’s importance to the community while at the same time providing an opportunity for the community to come together to learn and be entertained.  The theme of the 2013 Listowel Fair was ‘Picture Perfect North Perth!’  The fair focused on the picturesque beauty that North Perth has to offer.  It is very important to the Listowel Agricultural Society that they be a part of the community and support the community that supports them in their many ventures throughout the year.  Plans are already underway for the 2014 Listowel Fair being held July 17th -20th.  The 2014 Listowel Fair will mark the 100th Anniversary of the year the Listowel Agricultural Hall, formerly known as the Armouries, was built by the Ministry of National Defence for Basic Military Training for the Canadian Forces.

In addition to the annual Agricultural Fair, the Listowel Agricultural Society is busy throughout the rest of the year with events both in the Agricultural Hall and on the fairgrounds.

The Listowel Agricultural Society is a part of the Relay for Life fund-raiser held annually in June, they host the Snowmobile Drag Races each year in January, they host a Yuk Yuk’s Dinner and Show as part of Paddyfest each March as well hosting an Appreciation Dinner each April to thank all of their Listowel Fair volunteers and supporters.  The Listowel Agricultural Society prides itself on supporting youth in the community as well through such activities as sponsoring Family Skates at various arenas, hosting 4-H activities throughout the year, hosting the U-6 Year-end Soccer Tournament as well as the many youth events at the fair such as the Ambassador Competition, Youth Talent Search, Kid’s Day events, 4-H Lifeskills Competition, Children’s Pedal Tractor Pull, 4-H Achievement Programs for Dairy, Small Animal and Rabbit 4-H Clubs, Schoolwork Competitions and the Pet Show.  The Listowel Agricultural Society is quite happy to be able to provide volunteer hours for high school students throughout the year.

The Listowel Agricultural Hall, operated by the board of directors of the Listowel Agricultural Society is the host of several workshops, seminars, courses, trade shows, blood donor clinics, all-candidates debates, weddings, meetings, dinners, dances and fund-raisers.

The Listowel Agricultural Society is honoured to have been nominated for the North Perth Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award in the Community Service Organization Category and is looking forward to being a part of the North Perth Community for another 157 years.
