Description

International Dairy Queen, Inc. a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc. Dairy Queen operators have been providing consumers with crave-satisfying treats and food since 1940.

Congratulations to the Dairy Queen in Listowel for their nomination into the 2013 Business Excellence Awards- Business of the Year under 20 employees and Community Service Business Award.

The Chamber is pleased to be able to share their profile.

We have been nominated for business of the year 3 times and have won countless awards through dairy queen for sales growth, customer service, cleanliness and quality control.  We have won the DQ award for cake sales 4 years in a row with a minimum sales growth of 25% per year.

We have been a member for the Chamber of commerce 8 out of the last 9 years.  I have been on the board of directors for 2 years.  I am on the board of directors for the BIA in North Perth.  I volunteer at the local public school where 2 of my 3 kids attend.  I am a member of the Blue Lodge Freemasons, the Red Lodge Freemasons as well as the Knights Templar organization where we do many different charity events throughout the year.  We pay for many kids to play sports in Listowel and I’m also the soccer coach on two different soccer teams. One baseball team and beginning to coach Hockey this upcoming winter. Also volunteer at Promar Karate to help teach young kids self defence.  We Donate 2% of sales to various local charities on top of the money we give to the London Children’s Hospital.  So far this year we have given the hospital $2640.00. We also give away over 300 cake coupons each year for auction and prizes.  We also give a $500 bursary to a staff member each fall to put towards their education.  The early years centre comes over regularly with their kids and I let them make their own treats.  We also donate lunches to the public school twice a year to a lucky class.

This business was closed down before we moved to Listowel.  We have had up to 38 employees working for us.  We were actually nominated for both under 20 employees and over 20 employees. But had to pick one so we chose the Under 20 employees.    Being such a seasonal business our crew shrinks in size in the off season.  However, since our sales growth we now stay open years round with only closing 2 weeks over Christmas.  We now have 5 fulltime members year round.  For the first 7 years we put any money back into the business with repairs and updating with all local contractors.

even though we have much less than 100 employees we have always used the criteria for over 100 employee’s safety program and the safety criteria for factories.  We have a health and safety board with crew member s as representatives, lock out tag out program ect. Dairy Queen is a leader in the fast food business for food safety program and cleanliness checks.  We are years ahead of many other large brands in this area.

we have a recycling program that has cut down waste pick up by almost half over the course of a year.   A used fryer oil recycling program.  2 years ago we put in a state of the art grease trap filter.  Everything that goes down the drain must now go through this system before leaving the property. It is then discarded appropriately.

we buy everything we can locally including all produce that we use in the restaurant.  We have always used local contractors for repair and maintenance as for the first 7 years of owing the store we put all revenue back into the business and updating the building and equipment.
