Description

Community Living Ontario is a non-profit, provincial association that advocates for people who have an intellectual disability to be fully included in all aspects of community life. The goal of Community Living Ontario is:that all persons live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in the community, and have the opportunity to participate effectively. Community Living Ontario envisions a society where people who have an intellectual disability belong and feel respected.

Congratulations to Community Living North Perth for their nomination into the 2013 Business Excellence Awards - Community Service Orginizations. The Chamber is pleased to share their profile.

Community Living North Perth has been an incorporated entity within Listowel and area since 1959 currently providing supports to 42 people and employing 37 support staff and 4 managerial personnel. Community Living North Perth has been a member of North Perth Chamber of Commerce since 1998.

Our core business is to provide supports to adults over the age of 18 with a developmental disability to be fully included in all aspects of community life ensuring that all persons live in a state of dignity, share in all elements of living in their community, and have the opportunity to participate meaningfully. The organization is funded by the government of Ontario through the Ministry of Community and Social Services.

As an organization that is to fully support people to be included in their community in a meaningful way, it is through many of those endeavors that the organization, as a whole, remains involved in the life of North Perth.

Community Living North Perth strives to raise additional funds to provide support and services to teenagers with a developmental disability who are under the age of 18. These 12-15 students per summer receive assistance to enjoy a typical teenage summer, with the supports provided by 3 college or university bound local students. These types of supports have been provided since 1995 touching the lives of 100+ teenagers with a developmental disability and getting to know them and their families for future reference as well as providing a summer job for approximately 45+ post-secondary students during that same time frame. The fundraising activities themselves provide the community with a place to buy their last minute Mother’s Day presents with Gerbera Daisy sales in May selling 1000 plants annually and a twice a year luncheon of soup, sandwich and dessert at a reasonable cost in the spring and fall with each event serving 100-120 lunches.

The organization’s managerial staff continues to be involved in local committees of value to the community of North Perth, providing input and leadership to common local issues through these committees. The North Perth Violence Against Women, North Perth Transportation and the North Perth Character Council are the key connections. The organization also supports the North Perth Teddy Bear Picnic, North Perth Santa Claus Parade, the North Perth Chamber of Commerce Xmas Party, provides opportunity for L.D.S.S. co-op students on a regular basis, played a key role in the formulation through L.D.S.S. of the Youth 4 Inclusion movement, and offers, annually, a $500 bursary at L.D.S.S. commencement in the Eleanor Kress bursary for students pursuing post-secondary education in social services.

The main thrust of the organization’s footprint in the community of North Perth through community partnerships and community responsibility with vision and integrity comes in conjunction with the support provided to the Self Advocates of North Perth. The group, mainly made up of those we provide supports to, has played an active role within North Perth since 2004 and with our organization’s support has become a significant social contributor to the community. The group was the impetus behind the Community of Character movement when, in 2006, their production of a Public Service video that promotes inclusion was launched. It was that event that was the first Together We’re Better community night, which continues to this day in conjunction with a community wide character week. This movement spurred the formulation of a community representative committee - North Perth Character Council - that since 2007 has worked together to strive to make North Perth a community of character. The group itself held a North Perth Trail clean-up day during Character Week 2012. The Self Advocates of North Perth also do fundraising endeavors through hot dog sales, food orders, dances and, in turn, donate the funds to other community groups.

The organization has a multi-faceted connection to the community of North Perth and, itself, plays a valuable role within community – but most often through those we support and especially the Self Advocates of North Perth – so to nominate Community Living North Perth is to nominate them right alongside us!!
