The History of BBBS Listowel & District

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Listowel and District has been creating friendships since 1995. BBBS Listowel started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers through a satellite program out of Stratford. In 1996 Big Brothers joined with the Listowel Big Sisters Association to become Big Brothers Big Sisters Listowel & District. In 2003 BBBS Listowel became an independent member of BBBS Canada and the organization also established the very first office for the agency in the town of Listowel.

The agency has grown to include a variety of different programs that serve both boys and girls.  BBBS Listowel is proud of the achievements that have been made and the organization continues to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada.

BBBS Listowel & District Service Area

The service area is defined as the newly amalgamated municipality of North Perth, which incorporates the former town of Listowel, and the former townships of Elma and Wallace, all within the county of Perth. In addition to North Perth the defined catchments area also includes an area beyond the municipality of North Perth. This area includes the following, part of Perth East, including the former township of Mornington and the town of Milverton and the village of Millbank, and in the village of Ethel and also the township of Howick, including the villages of Gorrie and Fordwich.

Filling A Need Within Our Community

BBBS Listowel & District is committed to serving the children in the North Perth community, as well as its surrounding areas.
It is our vision that every child that needs a mentor has a mentor.  We have been working diligently to ensure that the needs of our community’s children are being met through the power of role modelling.  In 2013, we have served a total of 28 students through our In-School Mentor program that takes place at 6 local schools.   In addition, our Traditional program is currently serving 18 children.  By matching these children with an adult role model, we acknowledge the importance of a positive relationship that fosters growth and self esteem.  We are proud that our efforts in the community have proven successful in fulfilling our vision, one child at a time.

Serving the North Perth Community

Through Community Responsibility

BBBS Listowel & District recognizes the importance of a positive presence within the community.  The benefits of our programs are a direct reflection of the high standard of service that we strive to implement through each program and event.  By acknowledging the specific needs of families and children within our community, we are able to tailor our programs to fulfill the goals of each participating individual.  This means that our programs are evolving each and every year, reflecting a strong sense of responsibility to the North Perth community.

Through Innovation and Growth

It is an on-going goal of BBBS Listowel & District to increase the number of children served by our programs.  In order to achieve this, we continue to develop the In-School Mentor program, as well as the Traditional program to ensure more children have access to our services.  The ISM program currently operates out of six local schools, and due to its flexible nature has drawn in many new volunteers.  As we meet the needs of our Mentors, we find we are able to match more and more children.  Likewise, we have expanded our Traditional program to fit the needs of our community.  We have initiated a Cross-Gender Match program that matches Big Sisters to Little Brothers, which keeps young boys off of the waiting list and recognizes the need for diversity within the program.  As well, we have changed our policies to reflect the acceptance of a child one year younger than our previous cut-off age of 6 years in order to accommodate the needs of specific families.  As well, we have implemented a Couples for Kids matching program to initiate more interest from people who would like to volunteer with their partner.

In addition to our ongoing program adaptations, we continue to build our presence in the community through various speaking opportunities, the Friends of BBBS campaign, our bowling and baseball events, and through new advertising initiatives.  Our agency is committed to building awareness and recognition.

Congratulations to BBBS for winning "Service Organization of the Year" for the 2014 Business Excellence Awards!
